Unit Mission

The Hostage & Kidnap-for-Ransom (KFR) Advisory Team provides specialist advisory support to organisations and families managing kidnap-for-ransom incidents and hostage situations. The team advises on negotiation strategy, proof-of-life verification, ransom management, and the coordination of response activities — drawing on deep expertise in KFR dynamics, adversary behaviour, and negotiation methodology to guide clients through the resolution process while prioritising the safe return of the hostage.

Key Functions

Response Strategy

Advising on the overall KFR response strategy — including the decision to negotiate, the selection and management of a negotiator, the handling of communications with the kidnappers, and the management of information and media.

Negotiation Advisory

Providing expert advisory on negotiation methodology — advising on communication strategy, concession management, proof-of-life verification, and the psychological dynamics of the negotiation process.

Post-Incident Support

Supporting the post-incident recovery process — including debrief of the released hostage, psychological support referral, lessons-learned review, and the development of improved prevention and response measures.
