Unit Mission
The Youth Mental Health & Substance Use Support Unit supports youth mental health and addresses substance use — developing accessible, stigma-free mental health services, peer support programs, and substance use prevention and treatment resources that meet young people where they are. The unit applies youth mental health, addiction medicine, and peer support methodology to develop the comprehensive support systems that address the mental health and substance use challenges facing young people.
Key Functions
Mental Health Support
Developing youth mental health support programs — creating accessible, youth-friendly mental health services and peer support systems that reduce stigma and connect young people with the help they need.
Substance Use Prevention
Implementing substance use prevention — developing evidence-based prevention programs that address the risk factors for youth substance use and build the protective factors that reduce initiation and escalation.
Peer Support
Building peer support systems — training young people as peer supporters and developing the peer-led programs that provide accessible mental health and substance use support within youth communities.
