Unit Mission
The Neighborhood Emergency Response Training Unit trains neighborhood emergency response teams — developing CERT training programs, community preparedness curricula, and first-responder skills training that build community capacity to respond effectively to emergencies before professional responders arrive. The unit applies emergency management, community preparedness, and adult education to develop the training systems that equip community members with the skills needed to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors in emergencies.
Key Functions
CERT Training
Delivering CERT training programs — providing community members with the emergency response skills needed to assist professional responders during disasters, including first aid, search and rescue, and fire suppression.
Preparedness Education
Advancing community preparedness education — developing the curricula and programs that build community members' knowledge of emergency risks, preparedness measures, and response procedures.
Volunteer Development
Developing emergency response volunteers — recruiting, training, and organizing community volunteers into effective emergency response teams that can be rapidly activated during disasters.
