Unit Mission
The Environmental Community Action & Grassroots Science Unit mobilizes community environmental action and grassroots science — developing the community organizing, citizen science, and environmental advocacy programs needed to address local environmental challenges and build community capacity for environmental stewardship. The unit applies environmental justice, citizen science, and community organizing to develop the approaches that empower communities to monitor their environment, advocate for protection, and take collective action to address environmental threats.
Key Functions
Community Action
Mobilizing community environmental action — organizing community members to address local environmental challenges, from neighborhood cleanup campaigns to advocacy for environmental protection and remediation.
Citizen Science
Developing citizen science programs — training community members to conduct environmental monitoring, collect scientific data, and contribute to the evidence base needed for environmental advocacy and policy.
Environmental Education
Advancing environmental education — developing the programs that build community members' environmental knowledge, stewardship values, and capacity to take effective action on environmental issues.
