Unit Mission

The Community Environmental Justice Advocacy Unit advances environmental justice — conducting community organizing, advocacy, and legal support to protect neighborhoods from environmental harm and ensure that all communities have equal access to a clean, healthy environment. The unit applies environmental justice, community organizing, and legal advocacy to develop the grassroots approaches that empower communities to challenge environmental injustice and demand the environmental protections they deserve.

Key Functions

Environmental Organizing

Organizing communities for environmental justice — building the community power needed to challenge environmental injustice, demand accountability from polluters, and advocate for the environmental protections that protect community health.

Environmental Advocacy

Conducting environmental advocacy — engaging regulatory agencies, elected officials, and courts to advance environmental protections for communities facing disproportionate environmental burdens.

Community Empowerment

Empowering communities with environmental knowledge — providing communities with the environmental monitoring data, technical expertise, and advocacy tools needed to effectively challenge environmental injustice.
