Unit Mission
The Mass-Grave Exhumation & Forensic DNA Evidence Consulting Unit exhumes mass graves and conducts forensic DNA identification of victims — delivering truth and justice to families of the missing while producing the forensic evidence needed for war crimes prosecution. The unit applies forensic archaeology, forensic anthropology, and forensic genetics to systematically excavate mass graves, document evidence of atrocity, and identify victims through DNA comparison with family reference samples.
Key Functions
Grave Exhumation
Conducting mass grave exhumation — applying forensic archaeology and anthropology to systematically excavate and document mass graves, preserving evidence of cause of death and manner of killing for criminal prosecution.
DNA Identification
Conducting forensic DNA identification of mass atrocity victims — collecting ante-mortem reference samples from families, analyzing post-mortem samples, and producing the DNA matches that return victims to their families.
Family Support
Supporting families of the missing — collecting ante-mortem data, communicating identification results, and providing the compassionate support needed to help families navigate the traumatic process of mass grave identification.
