International Justice & Universal Jurisdiction Legal Task Force
Advancing international criminal accountability through universal jurisdiction litigation and ICC engagement.
Unit Mission
The International Justice & Universal Jurisdiction Legal Task Force advances international criminal accountability — pursuing prosecutions before the International Criminal Court, supporting universal jurisdiction cases in national courts, and developing the legal strategies needed to hold perpetrators of mass atrocities accountable regardless of where crimes were committed. The task force applies international criminal law, universal jurisdiction doctrine, and strategic litigation to identify accountability opportunities, support prosecution teams, and advance the development of international criminal justice.
Key Functions
ICC Engagement
Engaging with ICC proceedings — supporting preliminary examinations, providing evidence and analysis to the Office of the Prosecutor, and advocating for ICC investigations into situations where mass atrocities have been committed.
Universal Jurisdiction
Pursuing universal jurisdiction cases in national courts — identifying jurisdictions with universal jurisdiction legislation, developing case strategies, and supporting prosecution teams pursuing accountability for international crimes.
Legal Strategy
Developing international justice legal strategies — analyzing accountability options, assessing complementarity, and developing the legal frameworks needed to advance prosecution of mass atrocity perpetrators through available mechanisms.
