Unit Mission
The Environmental Justice & Eco-Defender Legal Shield Unit protects environmental defenders and advances environmental justice — providing legal protection to activists facing criminalization, documenting attacks on environmental defenders, and advocating for the legal frameworks needed to protect both people and the environment. The unit applies environmental law, human rights defender protection, and environmental justice advocacy to defend those who protect natural resources and ecosystems, and to advance the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.

Defender Protection
Protecting environmental defenders from criminalization and violence — providing legal assistance, security support, and advocacy for activists who face threats and prosecution for their environmental protection work.
Rights Advocacy
Advancing environmental rights — advocating for the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, supporting strategic litigation, and engaging international mechanisms to protect environmental rights.
Justice Documentation
Documenting environmental injustice — investigating the disproportionate environmental burdens borne by marginalized communities and building the evidence needed for accountability and policy reform.
