Unit Mission
The Detention Conditions, Scurvy/Malnutrition & Unlawful Imprisonment Oversight Team monitors detention conditions and challenges unlawful imprisonment — inspecting facilities, documenting rights violations, and advocating for the legal and operational reforms needed to ensure that detained persons are held in humane conditions with full respect for their legal rights. The team applies international detention standards, human rights monitoring, and legal advocacy to address the full spectrum of detention rights violations — from physical conditions to procedural rights and the legality of detention itself.
Key Functions
Facility Inspection
Inspecting detention facilities against international standards — assessing physical conditions, healthcare access, nutrition, and procedural rights to identify violations and advocate for the improvements needed to meet minimum standards.
Legal Challenges
Challenging unlawful detention — identifying cases of arbitrary or unlawful imprisonment, providing legal assistance to detained persons, and pursuing habeas corpus and other legal remedies to secure release.
Health Monitoring
Monitoring health conditions in detention — assessing nutrition, medical care access, and disease prevention in detention facilities, and advocating for the health standards needed to prevent preventable illness and death in custody.
