Unit Mission
The Arms Control, Disarmament & Demining Advocacy Team advocates for arms control treaties, disarmament programs, and mine action that reduce the civilian harm caused by conventional weapons, landmines, cluster munitions, and explosive remnants of war. The team applies arms control law, humanitarian disarmament advocacy, and mine action policy to engage states, international organizations, and civil society in support of the legal frameworks and operational programs needed to protect civilians from the indiscriminate effects of weapons.
Key Functions
Treaty Advocacy
Advocating for arms control treaties — engaging states and international organizations in support of the Mine Ban Treaty, Convention on Cluster Munitions, Arms Trade Treaty, and other legal frameworks that protect civilians from weapons harm.
Mine Action Policy
Developing mine action policy — advising on national mine action programs, international mine action standards, and the resource mobilization needed to clear landmines and explosive remnants from conflict-affected communities.
Impact Documentation
Documenting the humanitarian impact of weapons — collecting data on civilian casualties, displacement, and socioeconomic harm caused by landmines, cluster munitions, and other conventional weapons to support advocacy and accountability.
