Unit Mission
The Zoonotic Disease & Animal-to-Human Transmission Tracking Unit investigates zoonotic disease spillover events — the animal-to-human transmission events that are the source of most emerging infectious disease threats — and builds One Health surveillance systems that detect spillover before it leads to sustained human transmission. The unit applies veterinary epidemiology, wildlife ecology, and human health surveillance to characterize the animal reservoirs, spillover pathways, and human risk factors that drive zoonotic disease emergence.

Spillover Investigation
Investigating zoonotic spillover events — characterizing the animal source, transmission pathway, and human risk factors involved in animal-to-human disease transmission to inform prevention and early detection strategies.
Wildlife Surveillance
Conducting wildlife disease surveillance — monitoring pathogen circulation in wild animal populations to detect novel viruses and bacteria with pandemic potential before they spill over into human populations.
One Health Integration
Building One Health surveillance systems — integrating human, animal, and environmental health monitoring to provide the comprehensive disease intelligence needed for early warning of emerging zoonotic threats.
