Unit Mission

The Vector-Borne Disease Intervention & Epidemiological Unit investigates the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases — malaria, dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, Lyme disease, and emerging arboviral threats — and implements integrated vector management strategies that reduce transmission and protect vulnerable populations. The unit applies entomology, epidemiology, and environmental health to characterize vector populations, map transmission risk, and develop control interventions tailored to local ecological and social conditions.

Key Functions

Vector Surveillance

Conducting entomological surveillance to characterize vector populations — monitoring mosquito, tick, and sandfly abundance, species composition, and infection rates to assess transmission risk and guide control interventions.

Epidemiological Investigation

Investigating vector-borne disease outbreaks — characterizing case distributions, identifying transmission hotspots, and applying spatial epidemiology to understand the ecological drivers of disease emergence and spread.

Control Interventions

Implementing integrated vector management programs — combining insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, larval source reduction, and biological control to reduce vector populations and interrupt transmission.
