Unit Mission
The Torture Survivor Medical Forensics & Physical Rehabilitation Unit provides medical documentation and physical rehabilitation for torture survivors — applying the Istanbul Protocol to document torture evidence, providing the physical and psychological rehabilitation needed for recovery, and supporting accountability mechanisms that hold perpetrators responsible. The unit applies forensic medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and human rights documentation to serve survivors of state-sponsored and non-state torture, providing both the clinical care and the forensic evidence needed for justice.
Key Functions
Medical Documentation
Documenting torture evidence using the Istanbul Protocol — conducting comprehensive medical and psychological examinations, documenting physical and psychological sequelae, and producing medico-legal reports that support accountability mechanisms.
Physical Rehabilitation
Providing physical rehabilitation for torture sequelae — treating musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and neurological damage resulting from torture, and delivering the physical therapy needed to restore function and reduce disability.
Psychological Recovery
Supporting psychological recovery from torture — providing trauma-focused psychotherapy, managing PTSD and depression, and delivering the long-term psychological support needed for torture survivors to rebuild their lives.
