Unit Mission
The Radiological Exposure & Isotope Medical Triage Unit provides specialized medical triage and treatment for casualties of radiological incidents — nuclear accidents, dirty bomb attacks, and deliberate radiological exposures — applying health physics, radiation medicine, and emergency management to assess radiation dose, triage casualties by exposure severity, and implement the medical interventions needed to manage acute radiation syndrome and internal contamination.
Key Functions
Dose Assessment
Assessing radiation dose in radiological incident casualties — applying physical dosimetry, biodosimetry, and clinical indicators to estimate exposure levels and triage patients by acute radiation syndrome severity.
Medical Management
Managing acute radiation syndrome and internal contamination — implementing treatment protocols for hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, and neurovascular radiation syndromes, and administering decorporation agents for internal contamination.
Long-term Monitoring
Establishing long-term health monitoring programs for radiological incident survivors — tracking cancer risk, implementing screening protocols, and providing the ongoing medical surveillance needed to detect and manage late radiation health effects.
