Unit Mission
The Radiation Protection & Nuclear Health Impact Unit protects populations from radiation exposure and manages the long-term health impacts of nuclear incidents — developing radiation protection frameworks, conducting health surveillance for radiation-exposed populations, and providing the medical management needed for radiation-related health conditions. The unit applies health physics, radiation epidemiology, and nuclear medicine to assess radiation risks, implement protective measures, and monitor the health of populations exposed to ionizing radiation from nuclear accidents, medical sources, and occupational exposures.
Key Functions
Health Surveillance
Conducting long-term health surveillance for radiation-exposed populations — monitoring cancer incidence, thyroid disease, and other radiation-related health outcomes to detect late effects and inform medical management.
Medical Management
Providing medical management for radiation-related health conditions — treating radiation-induced thyroid disease, managing cancer screening programs, and providing the specialized care needed for populations with elevated radiation exposure.
Protection Frameworks
Developing radiation protection frameworks — establishing dose limits, protective action guidelines, and monitoring programs that minimize radiation exposure for workers, patients, and the public.
