Unit Mission
The Mental Health & Substance Use Behavioral Response Unit delivers integrated mental health and substance use treatment in humanitarian and resource-limited settings — providing the psychiatric care, psychotherapy, and addiction treatment needed to address the mental health crisis that accompanies conflict, displacement, and disaster. The unit applies global mental health, addiction medicine, and humanitarian response to scale up mental health services, integrate mental health into primary care, and develop the community-based approaches needed to reach populations with limited access to specialist care.
Key Functions
Clinical Services
Delivering psychiatric and psychological clinical services in humanitarian settings — providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for depression, PTSD, psychosis, and other mental health conditions using WHO mhGAP protocols.
Addiction Treatment
Providing substance use disorder treatment — delivering opioid substitution therapy, behavioral interventions, and harm reduction services that address the addiction and substance use disorders prevalent in conflict-affected populations.
System Integration
Integrating mental health into primary care — training primary health care workers in mental health assessment and treatment, developing referral pathways, and building the integrated service delivery systems needed to scale mental health care.
