Unit Mission

The Lead, Asbestos & Chemical Exposure Health Impact Unit assesses and manages the health impacts of legacy chemical exposures — lead paint, asbestos, and persistent organic pollutants — that continue to cause preventable disease in vulnerable communities. The unit conducts health impact assessments, provides medical management for exposure-related conditions, and advocates for abatement and remediation programs that eliminate exposure pathways — with particular focus on the health equity dimensions of legacy contamination that disproportionately affects low-income and minority communities.

Key Functions

Health Impact Assessment

Assessing the health impacts of lead, asbestos, and legacy chemical exposures — quantifying the burden of lead-associated cognitive impairment, asbestos-related disease, and other chemical health effects in affected communities.

Medical Management

Providing medical management for chemical exposure-related conditions — treating lead poisoning, managing asbestos-related lung disease, and providing the specialized care needed for communities with elevated legacy chemical exposures.

Community Programs

Developing community health programs for legacy chemical exposures — designing screening programs, health education, and follow-up care systems that identify and manage exposure-related health conditions in affected communities.
