Unit Mission
The Hazardous Materials Exposure Clinical Response Unit provides specialized clinical management for patients exposed to hazardous materials — industrial chemicals, toxic gases, and hazardous substances released in accidents, transportation incidents, or deliberate attacks. The unit applies toxicology, emergency medicine, and hazmat operations to assess exposure severity, implement decontamination, and provide the specialized treatment needed to manage acute toxic exposures and prevent long-term health effects.
Key Functions
Clinical Assessment
Conducting clinical assessment of hazardous materials exposures — evaluating exposure severity, identifying the toxic syndrome, and determining the treatment priorities for patients exposed to industrial chemicals and hazardous substances.
Treatment Protocols
Implementing specialized treatment protocols for toxic exposures — administering antidotes, managing respiratory and cardiovascular complications, and providing the supportive care needed to manage acute hazmat casualties.
Incident Coordination
Coordinating hazmat medical response — integrating with hazmat teams, poison control centers, and hospital systems to ensure that exposed patients receive appropriate decontamination and clinical care throughout the response.
