Unit Mission
The Global Health Security, Border Quarantine & Biosurveillance Team strengthens international health security by building biosurveillance networks, implementing border health measures, and supporting the International Health Regulations framework that enables early detection and containment of public health threats of international concern. The team applies global health security science, epidemiological intelligence, and border health operations to detect emerging threats, assess their pandemic potential, and coordinate the international response needed to prevent global spread.
Key Functions
Biosurveillance
Operating global biosurveillance networks — monitoring disease signals from syndromic surveillance, media monitoring, and laboratory networks to detect emerging health threats before they reach pandemic scale.
Border Health
Implementing border health measures at points of entry — conducting health screening, managing quarantine operations, and coordinating with customs and immigration authorities to prevent the international spread of infectious diseases.
IHR Coordination
Supporting International Health Regulations implementation — advising states on core capacity development, facilitating information sharing, and coordinating the international response to public health emergencies of international concern.
