Unit Mission
The Gender-Based Violence Medical Forensic Protocol & Treatment Unit provides survivor-centered medical and forensic care for gender-based violence — delivering the clinical treatment, psychosocial support, and forensic documentation needed to address the health consequences of sexual violence and intimate partner violence in humanitarian and conflict settings. The unit applies GBV medicine, forensic nursing, and survivor-centered care principles to develop clinical protocols, train health workers, and establish the safe, confidential services that survivors need to access care.
Key Functions
Clinical Care
Providing survivor-centered clinical care for GBV — delivering medical treatment, post-exposure prophylaxis, emergency contraception, and psychosocial support to survivors of sexual violence and intimate partner violence.
Forensic Documentation
Conducting forensic documentation of sexual violence — collecting and preserving forensic evidence, completing medico-legal documentation, and supporting survivors who choose to pursue legal accountability.
Protocol Development
Developing GBV clinical protocols and training programs — designing evidence-based clinical management protocols and training health workers in survivor-centered GBV care to scale up quality services in humanitarian settings.
