Unit Mission
The Disaster Mortuary, Mass-Fatality & Dignified Handling Logistics Team manages mass fatality incidents — disasters, terrorist attacks, and conflict events that produce large numbers of deaths — with the forensic rigor needed for victim identification and the dignity that respects the deceased and supports grieving families. The team applies disaster mortuary science, forensic pathology, and victim identification to establish temporary mortuary facilities, collect ante-mortem data, and conduct the systematic identification process that returns remains to families and supports accountability.
Key Functions
Mortuary Operations
Establishing and operating temporary mortuary facilities — managing remains reception, storage, and processing with the forensic rigor and dignified handling standards needed for mass fatality victim identification.
Victim Identification
Conducting systematic victim identification operations — collecting post-mortem data, coordinating ante-mortem data collection from families, and applying DNA, fingerprint, and dental comparison to identify victims and return remains to families.
Family Support
Operating family assistance centers — providing families with information about the identification process, collecting ante-mortem data, and delivering the compassionate support needed to help families navigate the traumatic experience of mass fatality incidents.
