Austere Surgical Sciences & Mobile Operating Theater Team

Delivering life-saving surgical care in austere environments through mobile operating theaters and damage control surgery.

Unit Mission

The Austere Surgical Sciences & Mobile Operating Theater Team delivers life-saving surgical care in austere environments — deploying mobile operating theaters and applying damage control surgery principles to save lives when patients cannot be evacuated to definitive surgical facilities. The team applies military surgery, anesthesia, and surgical nursing to perform emergency procedures in resource-constrained settings, managing the most critical injuries with the equipment and supplies that can be transported to the field.

Key Functions

Damage Control Surgery

Performing damage control surgery in austere environments — applying abbreviated surgical techniques that control hemorrhage and contamination, stabilize patients for evacuation, and defer definitive repair to better-resourced facilities.

Mobile Theater Operations

Deploying and operating mobile operating theaters — establishing sterile surgical environments in field conditions, managing anesthesia with portable equipment, and maintaining surgical capability in environments without fixed infrastructure.

Post-Operative Care

Providing post-operative care in austere settings — managing surgical patients through the recovery period with limited resources, monitoring for complications, and preparing patients for evacuation to higher levels of care.
