Unit Mission
The Air Quality, Wildfire Smoke & Pollution Health Impact Study Team investigates the health impacts of air pollution and wildfire smoke — characterizing the respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological effects of particulate matter, ozone, and toxic air pollutants on exposed populations. The team applies environmental epidemiology, exposure science, and public health to quantify health burdens, identify vulnerable populations, and develop protective action guidance that reduces harm during air quality emergencies.
Key Functions
Health Impact Assessment
Assessing the health impacts of air pollution and wildfire smoke — quantifying excess respiratory and cardiovascular disease attributable to air quality exposures and identifying the communities and populations most vulnerable to air pollution harm.
Exposure Characterization
Characterizing air pollution and wildfire smoke exposures — measuring particulate matter, ozone, and toxic air pollutant concentrations, modeling population exposure, and assessing the health risks of specific pollution events.
Protective Guidance
Developing protective action guidance for air quality emergencies — advising on indoor air quality measures, activity restrictions, and evacuation decisions that reduce health impacts during wildfire smoke events and air quality crises.
