Unit Mission
The Space Policy & Orbital Asset Security Research Team researches space policy and orbital asset security — analyzing the governance frameworks, security challenges, and strategic dynamics of the space domain to develop the policy recommendations and security strategies needed to ensure the peaceful and sustainable use of outer space. The team applies space law, strategic studies, and space security to assess the risks to orbital assets, analyze space governance gaps, and develop the policy frameworks needed to prevent conflict in the space domain.
Key Functions
Space Policy
Analyzing space policy and governance — assessing the adequacy of existing space law and governance frameworks, identifying gaps, and developing policy recommendations that advance peaceful and sustainable space use.
Orbital Security
Assessing orbital asset security — analyzing the threats to satellites and space infrastructure from anti-satellite weapons, cyber attacks, and debris, and developing the security strategies needed to protect critical space assets.
Space Diplomacy
Supporting space diplomacy — developing the diplomatic frameworks and confidence-building measures needed to prevent conflict in the space domain and advance international cooperation on space governance.
