Unit Mission
The Oceans, Environment & Scientific Affairs Diplomacy Team advances ocean governance, environmental diplomacy, and scientific cooperation — engaging international organizations, regional bodies, and national governments to develop the governance frameworks, treaties, and cooperative arrangements needed to protect ocean ecosystems, advance environmental protection, and promote scientific cooperation. The team applies ocean law, environmental diplomacy, and science diplomacy to develop the international agreements and partnerships needed for effective global environmental governance.
Key Functions
Ocean Diplomacy
Advancing ocean governance diplomacy — engaging international organizations and coastal states to develop the governance frameworks, marine protected areas, and fisheries management agreements needed to protect ocean ecosystems.
Environmental Treaties
Supporting environmental treaty negotiation — providing the technical expertise and diplomatic support needed to advance international environmental agreements on climate, biodiversity, and pollution.
Science Diplomacy
Promoting scientific cooperation — developing the international partnerships and data-sharing frameworks that enable collaborative scientific research on global environmental challenges.
