Unit Mission
The Human Geography & Spatial Displacement Research Unit researches human geography and spatial displacement patterns — conducting geographic analysis, displacement mapping, and spatial research that advances understanding of how populations move, settle, and adapt in response to conflict, disaster, and environmental change. The unit applies human geography, GIS analysis, and displacement research to produce the spatial intelligence needed for effective humanitarian response, durable solutions planning, and the governance of displacement-affected areas.
Key Functions
Displacement Mapping
Mapping displacement patterns — using GIS and spatial analysis to track population movements, map displacement concentrations, and identify the geographic patterns that shape humanitarian needs and response requirements.
Spatial Analysis
Conducting spatial vulnerability analysis — analyzing the geographic distribution of vulnerability, service access, and risk to identify the areas and populations most in need of humanitarian assistance.
Solutions Research
Researching durable solutions — analyzing the geographic, economic, and social factors that enable or impede voluntary return, local integration, and resettlement to inform durable solutions planning.
