Unit Mission
The Disaster Sociology & Mass-Panic Behavioral Sciences Unit researches disaster sociology and mass-panic behavior — conducting social science research on how communities respond to disasters, how panic spreads, and what social factors determine community resilience and recovery. The unit applies disaster sociology, social psychology, and behavioral science to produce the research needed to improve emergency communication, design effective warning systems, and build the community resilience that reduces disaster impacts.

Disaster Behavior
Researching disaster behavior — studying how individuals and communities respond to disasters, identifying the behavioral patterns that affect evacuation compliance, mutual aid, and community recovery.
Panic Analysis
Analyzing mass-panic dynamics — researching the social and psychological mechanisms that drive panic behavior in emergencies, developing the understanding needed to design communication strategies that prevent panic.
Resilience Research
Researching community resilience — identifying the social, cultural, and institutional factors that enable communities to absorb disaster impacts and recover rapidly, informing resilience-building programs.
