Unit Mission
The Arms Control, Deterrence & Nonproliferation Intelligence Unit advances arms control and nonproliferation — analyzing weapons programs, assessing deterrence dynamics, and supporting the diplomatic negotiations and verification regimes needed to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The unit applies arms control analysis, nonproliferation intelligence, and strategic studies to assess WMD programs, evaluate deterrence stability, and develop the diplomatic strategies needed to advance arms control and nonproliferation objectives.
Key Functions
WMD Analysis
Analyzing weapons of mass destruction programs — assessing nuclear, chemical, biological, and radiological weapons programs to evaluate capabilities, intentions, and the risks they pose to international security.
Nonproliferation Support
Supporting nonproliferation diplomacy — providing the intelligence analysis and technical expertise needed to advance nonproliferation negotiations, strengthen export controls, and develop effective verification regimes.
Deterrence Assessment
Assessing deterrence stability — analyzing the strategic dynamics between nuclear-armed states to evaluate deterrence stability, identify escalation risks, and develop the confidence-building measures needed to reduce nuclear danger.
