Medical Countermeasures & Strategic National Stockpile Unit
Managing medical countermeasure stockpiles and deployment logistics for mass casualty health events.
Mission Statement
The Medical Countermeasures & Strategic National Stockpile Unit manages the planning, procurement, storage, and deployment logistics for medical countermeasures — vaccines, antivirals, antibiotics, antitoxins, and medical equipment — needed to respond to biological emergencies at mass scale. The unit develops deployment plans that get countermeasures to affected populations within hours of activation, and advises governments on stockpile composition and maintenance strategies that balance cost against preparedness.
Key Functions
Stockpile Management
Advising on the composition, procurement, storage, and maintenance of strategic medical countermeasure stockpiles — balancing coverage requirements against cost, shelf life, and the evolving threat landscape.
Deployment Logistics
Developing and exercising deployment plans that move countermeasures from storage to affected populations within hours of activation, managing the logistics chain from national stockpile to last-mile distribution.
Mass Vaccination Coordination
Coordinating mass vaccination campaigns during biological emergencies — site selection, staffing, cold chain management, adverse event monitoring, and coverage tracking to achieve protective population immunity.
