Mission Statement
The Indigenous Rights, Land Sovereignty & Cultural Protection Team defends the rights of indigenous peoples to their lands, territories, and resources — and to the cultural heritage and traditional knowledge that define their identity. The unit documents land dispossession, supports indigenous communities in legal proceedings, advocates for free, prior, and informed consent compliance, and works to preserve endangered languages and cultural practices facing erasure.
Key Functions
Land Rights Defense
Documenting land dispossession and supporting indigenous communities in legal proceedings to defend their territorial rights — including before international human rights bodies and regional courts.
FPIC Compliance
Monitoring compliance with free, prior, and informed consent requirements for projects affecting indigenous territories — documenting violations and advocating for genuine consultation processes.
Cultural Preservation
Working to preserve endangered indigenous languages, traditional knowledge, and cultural practices facing erasure — supporting community-led documentation and revitalization programs.
