Mission Statement

The Freedom of Expression, Press & Assembly Protection Team defends the rights of journalists, activists, and civil society organizations facing repression of expression, press freedom, and peaceful assembly. The unit monitors attacks on journalists and human rights defenders, provides emergency protection support, documents legal harassment and censorship, and advocates for the legal and institutional reforms needed to create an enabling environment for civil society and free media.

Key Functions

Protection Support

Providing emergency protection support to journalists and human rights defenders facing imminent threats — security assessments, digital security tools, emergency relocation, and connection to protection networks.

Press Freedom Monitoring

Monitoring attacks on journalists and media freedom — physical attacks, legal harassment, censorship, and surveillance — documenting incidents and advocating for accountability and legal reform.

Legal Harassment Defense

Coordinating legal defense for journalists and activists facing strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs), criminal defamation charges, and other legal mechanisms used to silence critical voices.
