Mission Statement
The Food & Waterborne Illness Field Research & Response Team investigates outbreaks of foodborne and waterborne illness — from Salmonella and E. coli to cholera and hepatitis A — tracing contamination from source through the supply chain to affected populations. The team combines environmental sampling, food safety auditing, and epidemiological case-control studies to identify contamination sources, implement recalls and advisories, and prevent ongoing transmission.
Key Functions
Source Tracing
Tracing foodborne and waterborne illness outbreaks from affected patients back through the supply chain to the contamination source, using epidemiological, laboratory, and environmental evidence.
Environmental Sampling
Collecting and analyzing environmental samples from food production facilities, water systems, and distribution points to identify contamination sources and assess the scope of affected product.
Recall Coordination
Coordinating with food safety regulators and industry to implement targeted product recalls and public advisories that remove contaminated food from the supply chain and protect consumers.
