World Heritage Site Ecological Protection Unit

Conservation

World Heritage Site Ecological Protection Unit

Safeguarding the ecological integrity of UNESCO World Heritage Sites against development pressure, climate change, and management failure.

Unit Mission

The World Heritage Site Ecological Protection Unit works to safeguard the outstanding universal value of UNESCO World Heritage Sites with significant natural or mixed heritage — monitoring ecological condition, assessing threats from development, climate change, and inadequate management, and advising on conservation interventions that maintain the integrity that justifies World Heritage status. The unit engages with UNESCO, national governments, and site managers to strengthen protection frameworks and address the threats that place sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Key Functions

Integrity Monitoring

Monitoring the ecological condition and integrity of World Heritage Sites — tracking habitat extent, species populations, and threat indicators to detect deterioration and trigger management responses before irreversible damage occurs.

Threat Assessment

Assessing the impacts of development proposals, climate change, and management failures on World Heritage values — providing the scientific evidence base for UNESCO decisions on danger listing and corrective measures.

Management Advisory

Advising World Heritage site managers on conservation interventions that maintain outstanding universal value — developing management recommendations, supporting state of conservation reporting, and facilitating international technical assistance.
