Unit Mission
The Water, Wetlands & Riparian Zone Conservation Unit works to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems — rivers, lakes, wetlands, and riparian corridors — that support extraordinary biodiversity while providing essential water security services. The unit monitors freshwater ecosystem health, assesses threats from water extraction, pollution, and drainage, and develops conservation and restoration interventions that maintain the ecological flows and habitat connectivity on which freshwater biodiversity depends.
Key Functions
Freshwater Assessment
Assessing the ecological condition of freshwater ecosystems — monitoring water quality, hydrological regime, and biological communities to detect degradation and identify the management interventions needed to restore ecosystem health.
Environmental Flows
Assessing and advocating for environmental flow requirements — determining the water volumes and timing needed to maintain freshwater ecosystem function and negotiating their protection within water allocation frameworks.
Wetland Conservation
Advising on the conservation and restoration of wetlands under the Ramsar Convention — supporting site designation, management planning, and the wise use principles that balance conservation with sustainable human use.
