Unit Mission
The Water Quality, Ocean, and Watershed Protection Task Force monitors water quality across freshwater and coastal systems, investigates pollution sources, and develops remediation strategies for contaminated water bodies. The task force applies hydrological science, water chemistry, and ecological assessment to characterize contamination, trace pollution pathways, and advise on the regulatory and engineering interventions needed to restore water quality and protect the communities and ecosystems that depend on clean water.
Key Functions
Water Quality Monitoring
Operating water quality monitoring programs across watersheds and coastal zones — measuring physical, chemical, and biological indicators to characterize contamination, detect deterioration, and track recovery following remediation.
Pollution Investigation
Investigating water pollution incidents and chronic contamination — tracing pollutant pathways from source to receptor, identifying responsible parties, and developing the evidence base for regulatory enforcement and legal action.
Remediation Advisory
Advising on water quality remediation strategies — developing technically sound and cost-effective approaches to reducing nutrient loads, removing contaminants, and restoring ecological function in degraded water bodies.
