Unit Mission
The Underground Storage Tank Leakage & Containment Team investigates underground storage tank systems for leaks and structural failures, characterizes petroleum and chemical contamination resulting from releases, and develops remediation strategies that prevent further migration and restore contaminated soil and groundwater. The team applies environmental engineering, hydrogeology, and remediation technology to address the widespread contamination legacy of aging underground storage infrastructure.
Key Functions
Leak Investigation
Investigating underground storage tank systems for leaks and releases — applying soil gas surveys, groundwater monitoring, and tank integrity testing to detect contamination and characterize the extent of petroleum and chemical releases.
Plume Characterization
Characterizing groundwater contamination plumes from UST releases — mapping contaminant distribution, assessing migration pathways, and evaluating risks to drinking water supplies and ecological receptors.
Corrective Action
Developing and implementing corrective action plans for UST contamination — designing free product recovery, soil treatment, and groundwater remediation systems that achieve cleanup standards and protect human health and the environment.
