Unit Mission
The Sustainable Agriculture & Green Chemistry Field Unit promotes the transition to sustainable agricultural systems and green chemistry practices that minimize toxic chemical use, reduce environmental contamination, and protect farmer and community health. The unit develops and disseminates integrated pest management approaches, organic farming techniques, and green chemistry alternatives to hazardous pesticides and industrial chemicals — working with farmers, industry, and regulators to accelerate the adoption of safer, more sustainable practices.
Key Functions
IPM Promotion
Developing and promoting integrated pest management approaches that reduce pesticide use — designing IPM programs tailored to specific crops and agroecological contexts that maintain yields while minimizing chemical inputs and environmental contamination.
Green Chemistry
Identifying and promoting green chemistry alternatives to hazardous industrial chemicals — evaluating safer substitutes for toxic solvents, reagents, and materials and supporting industry adoption through technical advisory and demonstration projects.
Farmer Engagement
Engaging directly with farming communities to promote sustainable practices — delivering training, demonstration plots, and technical support that build farmer capacity to adopt IPM, organic methods, and reduced-chemical approaches.
