Unit Mission
The Species Survival & Red List Threat Assessment Team conducts rigorous scientific assessments of extinction risk for threatened species worldwide — applying IUCN Red List criteria to evaluate population trends, habitat loss, and threat severity across taxonomic groups. The team coordinates species survival programs, develops recovery plans, and mobilizes the scientific and conservation resources needed to prevent extinctions and restore viable wild populations.
Key Functions
Extinction Risk Assessment
Conducting systematic assessments of extinction risk for threatened species — applying IUCN Red List criteria to evaluate population size, trend, and geographic range to produce authoritative threat classifications that guide conservation priority-setting.
Recovery Planning
Developing and implementing species recovery plans that identify the actions, resources, and partnerships needed to restore threatened populations — setting measurable recovery targets and coordinating multi-stakeholder implementation.
Survival Program Coordination
Coordinating ex-situ conservation programs — captive breeding, seed banking, and tissue preservation — that maintain insurance populations and genetic diversity for species at imminent risk of wild extinction.
