Unit Mission
The Resource Depletion, Scarcity & Famine Horizon Analytics Unit develops long-horizon forecasting models for critical resource depletion — water, soil, fisheries, and agricultural land — and famine risk, providing the analytical foresight needed to enable preventive action before scarcity crises become acute. The unit applies systems dynamics, ecological economics, and food security analysis to project resource trajectories, identify tipping points, and develop the early warning indicators that trigger timely policy and humanitarian response.
Key Functions
Depletion Forecasting
Developing long-horizon models of critical resource depletion — projecting trajectories for soil fertility, groundwater, fisheries, and agricultural land under current use patterns to identify the timescales and conditions under which scarcity crises will emerge.
Famine Horizon Analysis
Analyzing famine risk horizons — integrating food production projections, population growth, climate scenarios, and conflict risk to identify the regions and timeframes at greatest risk of famine and trigger preventive action.
Early Warning
Developing resource scarcity early warning indicators — identifying the leading signals of approaching resource crises that provide sufficient lead time for policy intervention, investment, and humanitarian preparedness.
