Unit Mission
The Radiation Protection & Nuclear Response Task Force develops radiation protection frameworks, monitors radioactive contamination, and coordinates emergency response to nuclear incidents — protecting communities and ecosystems from the health and environmental impacts of ionizing radiation. The task force applies health physics, radiological assessment, and emergency management to characterize radiation risks, develop protective action guidelines, and advise on the remediation of radioactively contaminated sites.
Key Functions
Radiation Monitoring
Operating radiation monitoring networks that provide continuous surveillance of radioactive contamination in air, water, soil, and food — detecting elevated radiation levels and providing early warning of nuclear incidents.
Emergency Response
Coordinating nuclear and radiological emergency response — developing protective action recommendations, advising on evacuation and sheltering decisions, and coordinating the multi-agency response needed to protect public health during nuclear incidents.
Site Remediation
Advising on the remediation of radioactively contaminated sites — developing decontamination strategies, waste management plans, and long-term monitoring programs that reduce radiation exposure and enable safe land use.
