Protected Areas Enforcement & Management Task Force

Conservation

Protected Areas Enforcement & Management Task Force

Strengthening protected area management effectiveness and enforcement to secure biodiversity refugia against encroachment and exploitation.

Unit Mission

The Protected Areas Enforcement & Management Task Force works to strengthen the management effectiveness and enforcement capacity of protected areas worldwide — addressing the chronic underfunding, understaffing, and governance failures that leave many nominally protected areas as paper parks. The task force develops management effectiveness assessment tools, builds ranger capacity, and advises on enforcement strategies that deter poaching, illegal logging, and encroachment while respecting community rights.

Key Functions

Management Effectiveness

Assessing protected area management effectiveness using standardized frameworks — identifying governance gaps, resource deficiencies, and management failures that undermine conservation outcomes and developing targeted improvement plans.

Enforcement Capacity

Building ranger capacity and enforcement systems that deter illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and encroachment — developing training programs, deploying surveillance technology, and strengthening intelligence networks.

Community Integration

Developing co-management frameworks that integrate local and indigenous communities into protected area governance — building the community support and benefit-sharing arrangements that make enforcement sustainable.

Operational Capabilities

Protected area management effectiveness assessment
Ranger training and capacity building
Anti-poaching intelligence and operations
Boundary demarcation and mapping
Community co-management framework development
