Unit Mission

The Population, Refugees & Migration Affairs Diplomatic Unit advances international protection frameworks for refugees and migrants, advocates for durable solutions for displaced populations, and engages with the international governance architecture for forced displacement and migration. The unit applies international refugee law, migration governance, and humanitarian diplomacy to strengthen protection systems, address root causes of displacement, and develop the international cooperation frameworks needed for humane and effective migration management.

Key Functions

Protection Advocacy

Advocating for international protection of refugees and migrants — engaging with UNHCR, IOM, and national governments to strengthen asylum systems, prevent refoulement, and ensure access to protection for people fleeing persecution and conflict.

Durable Solutions

Developing durable solutions for displaced populations — facilitating voluntary repatriation, local integration, and third-country resettlement programs that provide lasting protection and enable displaced people to rebuild their lives.

Governance Engagement

Engaging with international migration governance processes — contributing to Global Compact on Refugees and Global Compact for Migration implementation, and advocating for the international cooperation frameworks needed for humane migration management.
