Unit Mission
The Oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Team develops oil spill prevention frameworks, conducts facility risk assessments, and coordinates rapid response to petroleum releases — minimizing the ecological and community impacts of oil spills through prevention, preparedness, and effective countermeasure deployment. The team applies spill trajectory modeling, ecological sensitivity mapping, and response technology assessment to develop contingency plans and advise on the deployment of containment, recovery, and remediation resources.
Key Functions
Spill Prevention
Conducting facility risk assessments and reviewing spill prevention plans — identifying structural vulnerabilities, operational risks, and prevention measure gaps at oil storage and handling facilities to reduce spill probability.
Response Coordination
Coordinating oil spill response operations — deploying containment booms, skimmers, and dispersants, directing cleanup crews, and managing the multi-agency response needed to minimize ecological damage from petroleum releases.
Ecological Assessment
Assessing ecological impacts of oil spills — mapping sensitive habitats and species at risk, monitoring contamination spread, and evaluating the effectiveness of response measures to inform adaptive management of cleanup operations.
