Unit Mission
The Microplastics & Nano-Particle Extraction Field Unit investigates the sources, distribution, and ecological and health impacts of microplastic and nanoparticle contamination in environmental media — and develops extraction and remediation technologies to address this pervasive and growing pollution problem. The unit applies analytical chemistry, environmental toxicology, and materials science to characterize microplastic contamination, assess biological uptake and toxicity, and develop filtration and extraction approaches that reduce microplastic loads in water, sediment, and soil.
Key Functions
Contamination Assessment
Conducting systematic sampling and analysis of microplastic and nanoparticle contamination in water, sediment, soil, and biological tissues — characterizing particle size distribution, polymer composition, and spatial distribution to assess contamination extent.
Toxicity Research
Investigating the ecological and human health impacts of microplastic and nanoparticle exposure — assessing biological uptake, tissue accumulation, and toxic effects to characterize risks and inform regulatory standard development.
Extraction Technology
Developing and testing microplastic extraction and filtration technologies — evaluating physical, chemical, and biological approaches to removing microplastics from water treatment systems, stormwater, and contaminated sediments.
