Unit Mission
The Marine, Oceanic & Polar Conservation Task Force works to protect the world's most threatened marine and polar ecosystems — addressing overfishing, deep-sea mining, plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and the accelerating impacts of climate change on coral reefs, polar sea ice, and deep-ocean biodiversity. The task force conducts marine biodiversity surveys, advises on marine protected area design, and engages with international governance bodies to strengthen the legal frameworks protecting ocean and polar environments.
Key Functions
Marine Biodiversity
Conducting marine biodiversity surveys and monitoring programs that characterize species composition, abundance, and distribution across coral reefs, seamounts, and deep-sea habitats — providing the baseline data needed for conservation planning.
MPA Design
Advising on the design and management of marine protected areas — applying conservation planning principles to identify priority areas, design effective boundaries, and develop management measures that achieve conservation objectives.
Polar Protection
Monitoring polar ecosystem health and engaging with Arctic and Antarctic governance bodies — tracking sea ice loss, glacier retreat, and species range shifts to inform international conservation and climate policy.
