Lead, Asbestos & Chemical Exposure Health Impact Unit

Assessing and mitigating lead, asbestos, and legacy chemical exposures that cause preventable disease in vulnerable communities.

Unit Mission

The Lead, Asbestos & Chemical Exposure Health Impact Unit investigates legacy chemical exposures — lead paint, asbestos, and persistent organic pollutants — that continue to cause preventable disease in vulnerable communities, particularly children. The unit conducts exposure assessments, quantifies health impacts, and advises on abatement and remediation programs that eliminate exposure pathways — with particular focus on the environmental justice dimensions of legacy contamination in low-income and minority communities.

Key Functions

Exposure Assessment

Conducting exposure assessments for lead, asbestos, and legacy chemicals — sampling residential environments, measuring blood lead levels, and characterizing exposure pathways to identify the most significant sources of preventable chemical exposure.

Abatement Programs

Advising on lead paint and asbestos abatement programs — developing technically sound abatement specifications, oversight protocols, and clearance standards that safely eliminate exposure hazards in homes, schools, and public buildings.

Health Impact Quantification

Quantifying the health impacts of legacy chemical exposures — estimating the burden of lead-associated cognitive impairment, asbestos-related disease, and other chemical health effects to support regulatory action and resource allocation.

Operational Capabilities

Lead exposure assessment and abatement advisory
Asbestos survey and abatement oversight
Persistent organic pollutant monitoring
Children's environmental health assessment
Exposure pathway elimination
Community health screening coordination
