Unit Mission
The Invasive Alien Species Neutralization & Eradication Unit develops and implements strategies to detect, control, and eradicate invasive alien species — one of the leading drivers of biodiversity loss globally. The unit applies invasion biology, biosecurity risk assessment, and eradication technology to address invasive plants, animals, and pathogens that threaten native species and ecosystem function, with particular focus on island eradications and the prevention of new invasions through strengthened biosecurity.
Key Functions
Early Detection
Developing early detection and rapid response systems for invasive species — deploying surveillance networks, citizen science programs, and environmental DNA monitoring to detect new invasions before they become established and costly to control.
Eradication Programs
Designing and implementing invasive species eradication programs — applying rodenticide, trapping, biological control, and other methods to eliminate invasive populations from islands and other bounded areas where eradication is feasible.
Biosecurity
Strengthening biosecurity systems that prevent new invasions — analyzing invasion pathways, developing risk assessment frameworks, and advising on border inspection and quarantine measures that intercept high-risk species before introduction.
