Unit Mission

The Heat Resilience & Urban Cooling Prototyping Task Force develops and tests urban cooling solutions and heat resilience strategies that protect vulnerable populations from the intensifying extreme heat events driven by climate change and urban heat island effects. The task force applies urban climatology, public health science, and urban design to develop cooling interventions — green infrastructure, cool surfaces, shade structures, and cooling centers — and heat emergency response systems that reduce heat-related mortality and morbidity.

Key Functions

Heat Vulnerability

Mapping heat vulnerability across urban populations — identifying the neighborhoods, demographic groups, and building types most exposed to extreme heat to target cooling interventions and emergency response resources.

Cooling Solutions

Developing and prototyping urban cooling interventions — designing urban tree canopy expansion, cool pavement, green roofs, and shade infrastructure programs that reduce ambient temperatures and heat exposure for vulnerable populations.

Emergency Response

Developing heat emergency response systems — designing heat health warning systems, cooling center networks, and community outreach programs that protect vulnerable populations during extreme heat events.
