Unit Mission
The Hazardous Waste & Superfund Site Remediation Team investigates contaminated sites, characterizes hazardous waste, and develops remediation strategies that eliminate toxic exposure risks and restore contaminated land to beneficial use. The team applies environmental engineering, toxicology, and risk assessment to prioritize remediation needs, design technically sound cleanup approaches, and oversee implementation — with particular attention to the environmental justice dimensions of contamination that disproportionately affects low-income and minority communities.
Key Functions
Site Investigation
Conducting contaminated site investigations that characterize the nature, extent, and risk of hazardous waste contamination — applying soil, groundwater, and air sampling to delineate contamination plumes and assess human health and ecological risks.
Remediation Design
Designing remediation strategies that achieve protective cleanup standards — evaluating in-situ treatment, excavation, containment, and monitored natural attenuation approaches to select cost-effective solutions appropriate to site conditions.
Environmental Justice
Addressing the environmental justice dimensions of hazardous waste contamination — prioritizing remediation of sites in overburdened communities, ensuring meaningful community participation in cleanup decisions, and advocating for equitable enforcement.
