Unit Mission
The Forest, Grassland & Terrestrial Ecosystem Preservation Team works to halt deforestation, grassland conversion, and terrestrial ecosystem degradation — the primary drivers of biodiversity loss and carbon emissions globally. The team monitors forest cover change, investigates the drivers of deforestation, develops zero-deforestation supply chain frameworks, and advises on land use policies that protect intact ecosystems while meeting legitimate development needs.
Key Functions
Forest Monitoring
Monitoring forest cover change using satellite imagery and field verification — detecting deforestation, degradation, and forest recovery at national and landscape scales to support early warning and accountability systems.
Driver Analysis
Investigating the proximate and underlying drivers of deforestation and ecosystem conversion — analyzing the agricultural, infrastructure, and governance factors that drive land use change to identify effective intervention points.
Supply Chain Engagement
Developing zero-deforestation supply chain frameworks for agricultural commodities — working with producers, traders, and buyers to eliminate deforestation from supply chains for soy, palm oil, beef, and other high-risk commodities.
